Frost and snow on a photo ceramic monument – can winter weather damage it?

Winter is a time that raises many questions and concerns about stonework. Low temperatures, snow, frost and frequent weather changes make many people wonder whether photos on porcelain or crystal are safe and whether they will be damaged.

This is especially true during severe frosts, such as those we are currently experiencing. It is worth knowing what really affects the durability of photo ceramics and what is just a myth.

Can frost damage photo porcelain?

Well-made porcelain is not damaged by frost.
Opal products are fired at 850–900°C, which permanently bonds the pigments to the porcelain. This creates a uniform, hard surface that is resistant to extreme weather conditions, including sub-zero temperatures.

Is photocrystal safe in winter?

Photocrystal, like photoporcelain, is highly resistant to low temperatures, snow and moisture. Thanks to the high quality of the materials, it does not crack even during prolonged frosts and does not lose its colour.

What about snow and moisture?

Snow itself does not pose a threat to photoceramics. The problem could be moisture, which penetrates the material after the snow melts and then freezes again when the temperature drops, causing stress.

With OPAL photoceramics, there is no such risk because:

our porcelain has a water absorption rate of less than 1%,
the pigments are fired into the porcelain structure at a high temperature,
the surface is properly compacted and technologically protected.
Thanks to such low water absorption, the porcelain does not absorb water and, as a result, does not crack during frost. It is this parameter that is crucial in winter.

The most critical point in winter – the moment and method of installation

In winter, the threat is not the photoceramics themselves, but installation carried out in inappropriate conditions or not in accordance with the instructions.

Photoceramics are weather-resistant, but in order to maintain their durability and aesthetic appeal for years to come, it is crucial to install them at the right time and in the right way.

What should be avoided during installation in winter?

Installing photo ceramics at temperatures below +5°C.
Sticking it to a damp, dirty or icy gravestone.
Using silicone adhesives not intended for outdoor use.
At low temperatures, adhesives do not bond properly, which can lead to the photo coming loose after a few weeks or months.

How can you tell if porcelain is resistant to winter weather conditions?

It is worth paying attention to:

the firing technology (ceramic, not printed),
the colour fastness guarantee,
the manufacturer's experience.
At OPAL Fotoceramika, we guarantee lifetime colour fastness, regardless of weather conditions, including frost, snow and intense sunlight.

A keepsake for years to come – regardless of the weather

Winter does not have to be a cause for concern. Well-made photo porcelain and photo crystal are souvenirs that will last for years.

The most important thing is the quality of workmanship and correct installation in appropriate weather conditions.
